Tenerife is a year-round destination but some months are significantly better than others depending on what you're looking for. Here's our honest month-by-month breakdown.
Tenerife markets itself as a year-round destination, and it largely is - the south coast sees sunshine in every month of the year. But there are meaningful differences between the months that are worth understanding before you book. Here's an honest guide.
January and February
Weather: Cool by Tenerife standards - 19–21°C in the south, 15–18°C in the north. Mostly sunny in the south with occasional cloud. The north has more rain. Sea temperature: 18–19°C.
Pros: Cheapest time of year for flights and accommodation (outside of Carnival week). Quieter resorts. Excellent for hiking - the temperatures are perfect and the Teide National Park often has snow. The Tenerife Carnival (usually late February) is one of the best in the world, second only to Rio de Janeiro in scale. If Carnival falls in your dates, it's unmissable.
Cons: Too cool for committed sun-loungers. Sea is on the fresh side. Some beach bars and restaurants reduce hours in January.
Best for: Hikers, those on a budget, Carnival, older travellers who prefer mild temperatures.
Rating: 7/10 (9/10 during Carnival week)
March and April
Weather: 21–26°C in the south, 18–22°C in the north. Increasing sunshine. Sea warming to 20°C by April. UV rising.
Pros: The sweet spot on the calendar. Warm enough for beaches and swimming, not yet the intense heat of summer. The island is green and spectacular after the winter rains - particularly the Orotava Valley and Anaga. Good value for money compared to peak season.
Cons: Easter week pushes prices up sharply (late March or April depending on the year). Weather can be more variable than summer - occasional cloudy days possible even in the south.
Best for: Most visitors. Particularly recommended for first-time visitors who want good weather without summer extremes.
Rating: 9/10
May and June
Weather: 23–28°C in the south. Consistently sunny. Sea: 21–22°C. UV high (8–9).
Pros: Excellent weather. Quieter than July-August. Prices still reasonable. Long evenings. The island is at its most lush and green.
Cons: June can see the first calima events of the year, with heat spikes and dust from Africa. School holidays haven't started yet in the UK so families can't easily travel in June.
Best for: Couples, solo travellers, retirees. Best value-to-weather ratio of the year.
Rating: 9/10
July and August
Weather: 28–33°C in the south. Dry and intensely sunny. Sea: 23–24°C. UV extreme (10–11).
Pros: Hottest beach weather. Long days. The sea is at its warmest. Vibrant resort atmosphere.
Cons: Peak prices - flights and accommodation cost significantly more. Very busy resorts, particularly in the south. The heat can be oppressive in the middle of the day, limiting sightseeing. Calima events possible. Some people find the heat uncomfortable for anything other than the beach.
Best for: Beach holiday purists, those who want maximum heat, families during school summer holidays.
Rating: 7/10 (8/10 if you love heat; 5/10 if you want to explore the island)
September and October
Weather: 25–30°C in September, 22–26°C in October. Excellent sunshine in the south. Sea still warm at 23°C in September, cooling to 21°C by October.
Pros: September is arguably the best month of the year - summer temperatures without summer crowds, excellent sea conditions, prices dropping from August peak. October brings slightly cooler, more comfortable temperatures that are perfect for exploring.
Cons: October can see the first autumn weather systems - more cloud and occasional rain possible, particularly in the north.
Best for: Almost everyone. September and October are consistently excellent.
Rating: 9/10 (September) / 8/10 (October)
November
Weather: 20–23°C in the south. More variable - sunny stretches interrupted by cloudy spells. Sea: 20°C. First proper autumn rainfall events possible.
Pros: Low prices. Quiet resorts. Still warm enough for beach days in the south when the sun is out. Excellent hiking conditions.
Cons: More weather variability than spring or summer. The north becomes noticeably cloudier and rainy. Can feel like the end of the season.
Best for: Budget travellers, hikers, those who want a quiet resort.
Rating: 6/10
December
Weather: 19–22°C in the south on good days, 14–18°C on cooler days. Mix of sunny and cloudy periods. Sea: 19°C.
Pros: Christmas in Tenerife has a genuinely festive atmosphere. The warm weather feels special compared to UK December. Prices reasonable except over Christmas week itself. The Anaga forests and Orotava Valley are dramatically green.
Cons: Short days. Weather more variable than the summer half of the year. Some visitors find the festive period doesn't quite feel like Christmas in the heat.
Best for: Escaping UK winter, Christmas sun breaks.
Rating: 7/10
